Spat for Sat – Spatial Audio Research is a project developed by Eric Raynaud during the Symbiosis cross-residency (2019-2020) between the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) in Montreal and Ircam in Paris. This initiative aimed to push the boundaries of spatial audio design, exploring the creative potential of immersive sound through an OpenGL perspective.
The residency provided a unique opportunity to investigate the relationship between sound, space, and digital environments. The main outcome of this research is Spat for Sat, a prototype tool designed to expand the possibilities of spatial audio in Ableton Live. This project laid the groundwork for the later development of Xp for Live, providing artists with a more intuitive way to design, transform, and represent spatial sound.
The first public presentation of Spat for Sat took place during the IX Symposium 2021, organized by SAT as part of Satellite, a virtual space developed in Mozilla Hubs. This event allowed Raynaud to showcase the project’s creative outputs, demonstrating the innovative approach to spatial audio developed during the residency.
Spat for Sat is designed to bridge the gap between experimental sound design and real-time performance, offering a flexible, integrated framework for immersive sound. It reflects Raynaud’s ongoing commitment to expanding the creative potential of spatial audio, both as an artistic medium and as a tool for live performance.
