Isometric is an audiovisual piece created by Eric Raynaud (Fraction) in collaboration with visual artist Julius Horsthuis. Released in 2016 as part of the Planète Humaine EP (InFiné), the work explores themes of transformation and mutation through a fusion of ambient electronic music and minimalist 3D fractal visuals.
Horsthuis, known for his intricate fractal environments, adopted a monochromatic black-and-white palette for Isometric, diverging from his typical colorful aesthetic. This choice resulted in visuals that resemble bluish chrome, with shapes that appear to expand and collapse simultaneously, mirroring the ambient nature of Raynaud’s composition. The visuals move at a languid, molten pace, enhancing the immersive experience.
Raynaud describes Isometric as a journey through time and distortion, where the viewer becomes enveloped by sibylline patterns, leading to a cohesive audiovisual experience that feels as though the visuals were inherently part of the music. This collaboration was inspired in part by Raynaud’s earlier immersive dome performance, Entropia, which left a lasting impression on Horsthuis.
The piece has been featured in various formats, including a dome version with immersive 5.1 surround sound, and has been showcased at events like the Festival Sous Dôme in Paris.
